Ep. #63 with Kenton Chen, Ginger Murphy, and Josh Nelson
"No One Is Alone"
Their first collaboration, Sunday In the Park with George, won them a Pulitzer prize, one of only nine ever awarded to a musical. Their second, Into the Woods, earned them three Tony Awards including Best Score and Best Book. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine tell stories blending reality and imagination like no one else, forever changing perceptions and connecting humanity.
Into The Woods, a “quest fairy-tale musical” exploring what happens after “happily ever after”, began as a TV show pitch to Norman Lear. Lear loved the mash-up idea and wanted a screenplay. The writers declined. Lapine, of his epic tale, said to Sondheim “You’ll never be able to musicalize this”. Sondheim accepted the challenge and the show premiered in 1986 in Southern California at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego before heading to Broadway. It was during this local run that the song “No One is Alone” was added.
MUSE/IQUE’s Kenton Chen returns with Ginger Murphy and Josh Nelson to perform this gorgeous, powerful song.
