Ep. #67 Featuring Paulette Ivory, John Randall & Scotty Lund
"Waiting For Life To Begin"
Once On This Island premiered on Broadway in 1990 and was the first of many Broadway successes for the writing duo Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. Multiple premieres and revivals of the show earned the team countless theater awards and nominations, including the 1995 premiere production in London which won them the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Flaherty and Ahrens would go on to win the Tony Award for Best Original Score in 1998 for their musical Ragtime and the 2017 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical for that year’s updated production of Once On This Island.
During a terrible storm and to comfort a frightened child, a story is told. It is a legendary tale of a love between a poor peasant girl and a wealthy boy born into the high society grande hommes. In the musical, “Waiting For Life To Begin” is sung by the peasant girl Ti Moune, who, saved from a similar storm as a child, comes of age and yearns for adventure. One day, the car of a grande hommes boy crashes; Ti Moune is there to save the mysterious youth from the brink of death. What happens next is truly the fabric of fairy tales.
Here with their rendition of “Waiting For Life To Begin” are Paulette Ivory, John Randall, and Scotty Lund.
